I once read an article regarding chickens being trained to fly glide bombs during WW2.Where do I look for it?
According to this article Chickens have marvalous eye sight and could be trained to keep a picture of a ship lined up with cross hairs by pecking a set of control levers that dropped grain in a tray as a reward.This would in the functional model,fly the bomb into a ship!
They were pigeons. I don’t know where to find an article. It would be under Skinnerian or operant conditioning since B. F. Skinner came up with operant conditioning originally. Check out any operant conditioning experiment and you will understand how the pigeons where trained and how you can train your dog or cat to do a lot of things too.
The pigeons didn’t peck levers,they pecked at the view of the target and somehow that was linked to the bomb controls.
One famous experiment was to train pigeons to play ping pong with each other by pecking the ball. I saw that movie in college and trained 6 chickens to do the same. It took 4 sessions each and a total of 45 minutes of training for each chicken to peck the ball at their opponent. I was going to display this in classrooms,but the poop problem and the excessive force they used to peck the ball meant that I would need to build a poop proof cage with walls to catch the ball and return it to play and I ran out of money.
