1) The standard issue sidearm of the era was the Webley Mk 4 Revolver. The caliber was .455 –something just barely bigger than a US 45 caliber. Good and powerful. There is no direct statement that these were issued to Titanic’s officers, but there is no reason to believe otherwise. They would be stored in a gun locker when not in use and would be available to officers when needed. On the night of the accident some officers were armed, others were not. It seems to be a matter of individual choice.
2) There were no organized activities available to 3rd class. They organized occasional concerts and dances on their own. This was neither encouraged or discouraged by the company. The only deck space available for their use was the extreme ends of the ship –the forward and after well decks, the forecastle and poop deck. Everything else was strictly off limits.
3) There was a medical facility on board equivalent to a first rate small shore-side hospital. There was a surgeon and an assistant, with first rate medical equipment (at least first rate for 1912!).
