what colors of paints are best for plastic models?
im building a model of a ship from the deep space 9 tv shows and im wondering what colors would look best paint wise as im trying to create a damage effect and i need to know what colors to use to create a burning fire effect thanks
Assuming you don’t have an air-brush (they are fantastic but will set you back at least $100 for a brush &compressor) I would first prime the model with a white or grey undercoat and then base-coat it with a colored spray paint –automotive/car paints –building up the layers thinly to make it smooth. Apply the paint in short bursts,changing direction in vertical and horizontal zig-zags,shaking the can frequently in-between.
For damage you probably want a smokey,charred look. Easiest way would be to use acrylic paints (Citadel/Coat D’Arms/Tamiya/Vallejo –take your pick) applied in 50/50 dilute layers;a mix of black &brown should give you a nice oily-looking color. Paint streaks from center of the point of damage *inward*. By that I mean move the brush from the outside to the inside to drag the paint to the darkest point in the center.
For fire effects you want the center to be brightest –yellow with maybe a tiny spot of pure white and orange and red towards the outside edges:

Notice how everything in front of the flames is cast into darkness.
Smoke is a bit tougher but you can cheat by using cotton wool and painting it grey.
