Royal Caribbean stock?
Have been interested in buying stock in RCI. First off,I heard that if you own 100 shares you get $100 off any booking. They also pay about a 1.6% dividend. The analysts seem to generally like the stock and I like their business model. So,here are my questions.
First,is the $100 off true? We do 1-2 cruises/yr with them so the discount could add up over time. Next,I read that they carry a good amount of debt due to all the new ships that they are building and fuel costs (probably associated with their worldwide cruiser business model). So far,they seem to be filling their ships and their P/E ratio seems good. Am curious as to concerns people may have about the amount of debt RCI carries?? Finally,I have never privately purchased a stock (only mutual funds). What will be the outside costs associated with this purchase? Thank you so much.
I have the stock myself. As for the $100 off,I don’t think that’s true. Then again,I only own about 60 shares. If there is any truth to that rumor,then it might be something similar to what BUD does for Sea World. You get a gift certificate as part of attending the annual share holder’s meeting.
As for the stock.. I think it’s good but has it’s risks. Given it’s high debt level,it’s very unlikely it can grow the business because of the high costs of building a Cruise ship. It’s bottom line is also very sensitive to fuel costs and with high debt ratio,they can’t buy futures in fuel to protect themselves against fuel cost increases. Also with higher fuel costs,the air plane tickets get expensive and people will have a harder time affording to even get to the cruise.
On the positive note. Short hiccups asside it’s pretty well run. With returns on assets is only trumped by Carnaval given the relative size of the operation. The cruise industry as a whole offers a low budget vacation experience where people can live the 4 star lifestyle at the price of a 3 star hotel,and ontop of that get to see different cities.
