I am trying to build a clipper ship cutty sark 1/350 boat model?
I am building my first boat model and the instructions are not very clear
-Should i paint the pieces BEFORE gluing it together or AFTER?
-What paints do i need? I cannot find it anywhere in the instructions
-What do i start attaching first?
-How do i decipher the instructions?
-Do you know any sites that could help me?
Thank you
and It would be great if you could answer as many of these as possible!
i never got into boats, but i used to build quite a few model cars…..
i always felt it was best to paint parts before full assembly is done. things like the motor and transmission,it was two seperate parts and both got the same paint job. i’d glue them together 1st,and then paint them. once it wall dry and the thigns they clued to were ready,i’d then glue them all together.
you cant possibly paint every surface that will be visible if its all together already, and even if you could get the brush to that area, you’d get paint on other places that should be other colors. but painting places that wont ever be visible, like the floor underneath the seats,is a waste of time and paint.
depending on the model, they often said what color to use in what spots to achieve the look of the one on the box.
if its plastic, you’d want to use the same paints i used. testor’s acyrilic model paints, located on the same aisle as the models in most stores. if its wood or some other material, find a paint that is meant for use on that type of material.
for a truly smooth paint job,you need to spray the paint. while you can buy and use most spray paints, they do make cheap air brush kits for models, often found with the rest of the model supplies.
i had a kit in which the air came from a can. there was the button part that snapped onto the can of air,and a bottle of paint snapped onto it. push the button and it would blow air past a straw into the paint which would suck up paint and spray it. under $20,easy to clean, easy to get a new can of air for, worked with any liquid paint properly thinned. left very nice and very smooth brush stroke free paint jobs.
but,i wouldnt bother using the spray apporach on most of the parts. just the body, where brush strokes would always be visible.
what do 1st,deciphering the instructions….
models came in different skill levels. the ones i did were rated in a 1-3 scale. 1 was snap together,2 had more parts and needed glue. 3 had even more parts and was a much more detailed model. a level 3 model car might even have some little wire you were supposed to cut and glue on end into the distrubitor and the other into teh heads like they were spark plug wires.
if this model is giving you such a hard time,i’d suspect its a high level model and you need to start off with something a little easier. once you’ve built a few easier models, you’ll be ready for this one.
