how do you make a model of a viking ship?
my 12 year old needs to make a model of a viking ship. It has to be able to float. That is what his grade is based on. What materials would I use and is there instructions on how to make one.
Building your Gokstad or Oseberg Viking ship
1. Build your Boat- shape the hull of your Viking boat out of wooden material. Pay special attention to the design of the keel,for it needs to have the shape of a Viking longship. If you need to see what the design looks like,check out the drawings and pictures of the Gokstad and Oseberg ships.
Cut out your sail using thick paper,cloth or other sturdy material (like an index card). Your sail must be decorated using the colors that Vikings used (red and white stripes or red and yellow stripes.)
To make your mast,use a straw or wooden stick and anchor it to your mast. Tape the sail on to the mast. Make sure the mast is secure when the fan blows on the sail.
2. Make a rudder-draw and cut out a rudder. This is the hard part which will take trial and error. Attach the rudder ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE BOAT,NEAR THE REAR.
3. Your ship must have a dragon’s head at the head of the ship. However,due to the size of the ship,make it very small. Your ship’s hull may not exceed 11 inches. This does not include the head of the dragon.
